Wrightsville Beach Marathon 2014 – Race Report

Marathons: Paul #35, Leah #25, State #20 : Wrightsville Beach Marathon 2014
16th March 2014, Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, USA
Finish Time = 3:55:15

We arrived in Wrightsville Beach on the Friday night and spent the Saturday going to the Expo and exploring. We walked around the harbor and the beach and found it was definitely a big student/surfer town. We found a great store that sold fresh farmer produce and bought ingredients for cooking the best pasta dinner ever on Saturday night.

The run itself was good, although it didn’t incorporate as much of the beach area as you would have expected from the event title. There were also some bridges with metal grids which were tricky to cross and on the very first one we ran by a woman who must have fallen or twisted her ankle on it and was being helped by staff. The weather was good, overcast and only a little patch of rain later on in the race. We ran through some amazing neighbourhoods with huge magnificent houses.

One thing that definitely stuck out was how friendly and supportive the spectators were on the course. Some races will have clusters of people who will all shout out together as you go by, this one was more low-key and had people spread out who would genuinely smile and provide encouragement to you by name (which was on our bibs) as we ran by.

Unfortunately there were no finish line pictures so this is the best one we got. The post-race food was excellent, with a variety of drinks, snacks and all-you-can-eat pizza in a heated runner’s tent. I ate all I could eat.

This was a our 3rd Marathon within the first 2 weeks of March. I guess that gives a different meaning to the US tradition of March Madness!
