Marathons: Paul #28, Leah #18, State #13 : Philadelphia Marathon 2013
17th November 2013, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Finish Time = 3:46:59
We were lucky to have excellent weather for this run. It was cold on the Saturday but much warmer on the Sunday for the marathon. On the Saturday we explored the amazing Reading Terminal Market, which dates back to the 1890s (pretty old for the US), selling all kinds of fresh produce and family made items. We had some freshly made sandwiches for lunch and bought handmade cappuccino fudge for a post-race treat. Here’s some other interesting things we saw:
The marathon started near the Rocky Statue and the Rocky Steps (as in the Rocky movies) and we ran past some interesting landmarks such as Independence Hall which houses the Liberty Bell. We had missed our corral starting, as the queues for the toilets took over 30 minutes and so we had started in a later one. This meant we started off quicker than we would have done to catch up with the people running at our pace.
In an attempt to inject some humour into the run I did my best to shout out a slurring Rocky “Adrian!” impression to Leah if she started running off ahead. Several of these later, she asked what I was doing and if I was alright, possibly worried I was drunk. It turned out she had never seen any of the Rocky films and had no idea what I was saying
Ultimately our quicker pace to try to catch up with our group resulted in an unexpected 3:46 finish.
A very appropriate way to spend the day of our first year wedding anniversary!
